WITH Tas 2023 Scholarship winner announced

Meet Upuli Prabhashini Pathirana

Each year our Scholarship Interview Panel unearths talented, professional and committed young women, each studying hard to fulfil their aspirations for a career in tourism and hospitality. This year was no different.

Meet our 2023 Student Scholarship winner, Upuli Prabhashini Pathirana, who particularly stood out. Upuli is currently studying a Certificate III in Hospitality at TasTAFE, on a pathway to a Bachelor of Business – Hospitality Management at UTAS.

She has a passion for customer service, beginning her career in 2008 as a Travel Assistant. She rose to a professional level to become a Training Specialist in Hospitality and Tourism at BCD Travel, teaching and training people in customer service and improving their skills, gaining experience in Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates before moving to Tasmania.

The Panel commented on Upuli’s determination and clear goals for her future. She also showed resilience, wanting a world of equality and being very passionate about her intentions to uplift women in the industry.

Upuli says "Tasmania is an island of creative and curious minds, and it has a welcoming and collaborative community with amazing nature. As a person who loves to travel, explore nature and meet people, it will be a great opportunity to live in Tasmania. My goal in my professional life is to become a restaurant owner and to be a part of the positive change in Hospitality and Tourism. My personal goal is to build a better future for my children, be an excellent role model, while also providing quality time with my family."

Upuli’s employer, BW Events, wrote: “In addition to Upuli's outstanding customer service skills, she has also been an asset to our team in many other ways. Her willingness to take on additional responsibilities, such as training new staff members and assisting with inventory management, has helped to ensure that our establishment runs smoothly and efficiently.

Moreover, her positive attitude and friendly demeanour have also made a significant impact on our customers as they often comment on Upuli's warm and welcoming presence. Upuli has been instrumental in creating a positive and inviting atmosphere in our organization, which has contributed to our continued success.”

The WITH Tas Committee congratulates Upuli – we believe this young woman will not only have her own flourishing career in our industry but  lift others with her on the way.
